Premature Ejaculation (PE)

What is Premature Ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation (sometimes referred to as ‘rapid ejaculation’) and is defined as male sexual climax or ejaculation with minimal stimulation, often before, on, or just after penetration. The situation must be persistent or occur often to be considered a problem. Forty percent of men complaining of sexual dysfunction complain of PE.

What Causes Premature Ejaculation?

The cause of PE is not clear. The mechanism of ejaculation is actually quite complicated and is associated with three different simultaneous events: seminal emission (release of semen from the prostate), ejaculation (propelling the semen out the prostate and penis), and bladder neck closure (the prevention of semen going backwards into the bladder).

Erection, the ability to maintain enough penile firmness to allow penetration, is actually a separate physiological event that occurs with sexual stimulation and before ejaculation. Unfortunately for men with PE, the erection softens after ejaculation.
